Lewis Students Collaborate to Enhance Workplace Safety

Â鶹ÊÓƵ Programs Collaborate to Enhance Workplace Safety

Published: December 2, 2024.

Students from Â鶹ÊÓƵ's Aviation Maintenance, Occupational Therapy (OT), and Exercise Science programs recently joined forces for a unique interdisciplinary experience designed to promote workplace safety and health. This initiative aimed to reduce the risk of injuries often faced by aviation mechanics during training and in their professional roles.

The collaboration began with OT students observing aviation mechanics in the university’s hangar. They focused on identifying movements and practices that could lead to musculoskeletal disorders, such as repetitive motions, prolonged use of vibrating tools, and unsafe positioning. Following their ergonomic analysis, the OT students shared their findings with Exercise Science students.

In response, the Exercise Science students designed a customized sequence of warm-up exercises targeting the risks identified. On November 25, they implemented the plan by leading aviation students through a pre-shift warm-up routine in the hangar. The session also included education on reducing the risk of work-related musculoskeletal injuries.

This initiative highlights Â鶹ÊÓƵ's commitment to offering hands-on learning experiences that prepare students for successful careers. By fostering collaboration across disciplines, students gain a comprehensive perspective on workplace health and safety, equipping them to make meaningful contributions in their respective fields.

Â鶹ÊÓƵ is a modern, enterprising, Catholic university with a growing student enrollment from GED through doctoral level programs. As part of the global Lasallian network of 65 universities, Lewis is known for preparing graduates who impact the world for the better. Visit www.lewisu.edu for further information.
