Joliet Women’s History is Preserved By History Intern

Joliet Women’s History is Preserved Through Adelmann Regional History Collection Internship

Published: November 12, 2021.

The Joliet reaction during historic times, such as Jewish refugees fleeing Europe in 1939, is better preserved in the Adelmann Regional History Collection at Â鶹ÊÓƵ, thanks to a Â鶹ÊÓƵ History Student Vaughn Payne and team.

During his recent internship, he digitized the minutes of the Joliet Woman’s Study Club. Founded in the 1890s, the organization provided educational opportunities for women, which was limited at the time. The club documents cover their day-to-day operation but also refer to historical events.

“This internship helped me to develop my historical skills and knowledge,” said Payne, who is preparing for a career in the museum field.

Vaughn earned three credit hours for the 150 hours he spent in the collection. He then went on to work as a paid intern this semester. History students interested in an internship on campus or in the community for Spring 2022 should contact James Tallon, chair of the Â鶹ÊÓƵ History Department at tallonja@lewisu.edu.

Â鶹ÊÓƵ is an innovative and forward-thinking Catholic university offering market-relevant undergraduate and graduate programs to 6,200 students. Sponsored by the De La Salle Christian Brothers, Â鶹ÊÓƵ is nationally recognized for preparing intellectually engaged, ethically grounded, globally connected and socially responsible graduates.
